Energy hacks can help you save money on your energy bills. Perhaps you’ve even contemplated changing some daily habits. But if you are like most people, I’d bet you also like to just keep it simple. With that in mind here are five easy ways to hack that energy bill.

Get Energy Star Appliances

Did you know that a simple change in, say, your dishwasher, could result in twenty percent less energy expenditure every time you wash your dishes? Here’s another: your washer and dryer. If you use these appliances twice a week, by exchanging them for Energy Star versions, you could save as much as fifteen dollars a month on your energy bills. And guess what? The more Energy Star Appliances you have, the more the savings add up. Even better, you can use a percentage of their costs as a tax write-off.

Set Your Thermostat

You might not realize it, but there is an optimal setting for your thermostat that will help save your money every month. By setting your furnace at 68 degrees during the winter and your air conditioner at 74 degrees during the summer you can make a significant impact on your energy usage. And when you use a programmable thermostat that lets you make the house hotter or cooler when you are not home, you can save as much as ten percent off your total energy bill!

Energy Efficient Light Bulbs

Light bulbs are all the same right? Not at all! Energy -efficient light bulbs can use up to two thirds less energy than regular light bulbs. According to GE, switching out a 60-watt compact light bulb for a 13-watt compact one will result in a savings of $30 over the life of the bulb. Imagine if you switched out all your light bulbs!

Use Low-flow Water Fixtures

Did you know low-flow water fixtures are available for your toilet, faucets, and shower? Add this to good daily habits of turning off water when brushing your teeth, fixing leaky faucets and showerheads and you have some considerable savings.

Insulate, Insulate, Insulate

When was the last time you checked your attic? Is it finished? Well, guess what? Insulation in your attic makes a big difference in your energy usage. By insulating your attic, sealing any holes around pipes, and wrapping your boiler and exposed pipes with insulation you can make a big difference in your energy usage – and for a very small investment!
