According to the ENERGY STAR website, if all old refrigerators in the U.S. were replaced with ENERGY STAR certified models, Americans would save more than $800 million in energy costs and prevent 14 billion lbs. of greenhouse gasses annually, equivalent to the emissions from approximately 1.3 million vehicles or the annual electricity use of more than 876,000 homes.
That is a big impact. But, you are probably wondering just how much you can save by replacing your old refrigerator with a new ENERGY STAR model.
Again, according to the ENERGY STAR website, you can save more than $270 over the next 5 years by replacing a newer model, and for a model that is over 10 years old, you could save about $110 per year – and that is not counting available recycling rebates.
Using the Flip My Fridge calculator on the ENERGY STAR website, I was able to calculate my savings for replacing a refrigerator that is four years old.
Here are the numbers:

However, when I plugged in the numbers for a fridge that is 15-20 years old, here is what I would save:
$349 over five years
995 lbs. of carbon pollution over five years
10,509 lbs. more of carbon pollution when you properly recycle your old refrigerator
As you can see, the impact gets much bigger the older the model. And with applicable rebates, ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators can cost as little as $250. For example, to replace my four-year old model with an ENERGY STAR certified model my cost would be $286 after rebates in my state. Adding in the recycling rebate, my cost goes down to $263 – not as big price to pay for some serious carbon pollution reduction.
